For most artists, an international career is built over many years. For Mats van Biljouw, it happened in just three.
Three years ago, the 23-year-old DJ and producer was creating music from his bedroom in Horst, Limburg, and sharing his first tracks with friends. Today, he performs around the world under the name KLOFAMA, appearing in front of thousands of people at major hardtechno and electronic music events. His rapid rise has made him one of the most recognisable faces of a new generation of hardtechno artists.
But behind the name, the stages and the growing crowds is still Mats.
That is where I AM: KLOFAMA begins. In the short documentary, production company CULT. follows Van Biljouw through a year in which his career—and his life—changes at remarkable speed. Directed by Sten Hoeijmakers of CULT. Productions, the film moves between the intensity of international touring and the familiarity of home.
Airports, hotel rooms, backstage corridors and packed venues form one side of his world. On the other is Horst: the town where he grew up, the people who knew him before the success, and the childhood home to which he still returns. The documentary finds its central tension in that contrast. On stage, KLOFAMA is part of a rapidly expanding global scene. At home, he is still Mats—the son, friend and local figure navigating a life that has suddenly become anything but ordinary.

The weight of a growing identity
The film looks beyond the energy of the performances and the momentum of Van Biljouw’s career. It asks what happens when an artist’s public identity grows faster than the person behind it.
KLOFAMA has become a name recognised by thousands of people. But how does Mats relate to that identity when the lights go out? How do you stay connected to yourself when audiences know a larger-than-life version of you? And what does it mean to experience international recognition while still returning home to your parents and old friends?
These questions give I AM: KLOFAMA an intimate and personal focus. The documentary does not simply follow the trajectory of a successful artist; it observes the emotional and personal consequences of that success.
Away from the stage, the film captures Van Biljouw at the kitchen table, in the car and among friends who knew him long before KLOFAMA became an international act. In these quieter settings, the pace slows down. Conversations become more open, and the person behind the performance becomes visible. Feelings of uncertainty, loneliness, pressure and relief emerge alongside the excitement of success.

A career built at remarkable speed
KLOFAMA’s rise is also a reflection of the way the music industry has changed. Digital platforms and social media have made it possible for artists to reach a global audience without following the traditional path through local scenes, years of development and gradual recognition.
Van Biljouw’s journey illustrates that shift. Music made in a bedroom in Horst has taken him to some of Europe’s most prominent hardtechno and electronic music platforms, including Blackworks, Verknipt, Rotterdam Rave and Teletech. He has also performed at the iconic Johan Cruijff ArenA.
In the past two years, he has sold out several all-night-long shows in the Netherlands and abroad. These performances mark a significant transition: from emerging artist to an international act capable of drawing large audiences on his own.
Yet the speed of that transformation is precisely what makes his story compelling. Success has not arrived after a carefully predictable progression. It has come all at once, bringing opportunities, expectations and responsibilities that can be difficult to process at the same pace.

More than a music documentary
Although I AM: KLOFAMA is rooted in the world of hardtechno, its themes reach far beyond the music scene. The documentary examines what it means to become publicly visible at a young age, to build a career under constant pressure and to maintain a personal identity while the world begins to define you through a name, a sound and a performance.
KLOFAMA’s story is one of ambition and momentum, but also of staying connected to the place and people that came before the success. It is a portrait of an artist in motion—and of the person trying to keep up.
I AM: KLOFAMA is currently in production and is expected to premiere in mid-2027.
